Excellent explanation

I was taught in Econ 101 that EVERY TIME government tries to intervene in the free market, it screws things up. Every time.

That’s why we need to oppose EVERY “school choice” bill!

Heather, am I missing something? School choice, if done purely and correctly, IS free market! The reason our education system is a dismal failure is exactly because it is run by the government instead of allowing consumers to make decisions that are best for their families.

You choose where to shop for groceries, what car you want to buy, who builds your home, based on your wishes for good value, quality, and individual tastes and needs. Why should you not have the same opportunity to choose your child's education?

We can discuss "fairness" another time, I promise there are ways to make equal opportunities for all (not to be confused with equal outcomes).

Now I'm even more confused about your viewpoint. You support real school choice (money follows student)? Or you don't? You support ESAs (government still controls education via funding and regs)? Or you don't? You support government schools (just send the kids where the government tells you to)? Or you don't?

I read the article you linked, but it doesn't tell me YOUR viewpoint.

Not sure why my position/viewpoint is confusing after reading this article. It's a myth that "money follows the student." In the end, public schools don't lose that $, and once schools/students are tied to government $, government can impose standards, requirements, reporting, etc. Private and homeschools will become like public schools with these control mechanisms. True school choice would eliminate compulsory school laws, and parents would simply have the freedom to choose the type and amount of schooling for their kids, without government intervention. Less taxes up front, and parents are responsible for providing their children's education, as God has ordained.

Okay, Heather, thanks. Now I understand you! And I completely, absolutely, agree! The government can't do anything right, why should we expect government schools to beat any option in the free market?

I totally agree!
